The Cost of the Climb
The memories of the past season slowly begin to fade, giving way to, and replaced by, the present. Current expectations are high for everyone, with every prospect seen for what they can do, instead of what they cant, with every trade piece being valued or overvalued, in the hope of a nice return.
At this point in the season, there is only one winner the current Champion. Everyone else isnt a loser, but they really arent anyone. There are 29 anonymous faces in the crowd, trying to catch a glimpse of the movie star at the premiere. Whether this is widely understood or not, being the champion is the greatest achievement in the NSL.
The higher the climb, the deeper and steeper the fall thats just physics. For every calorie of energy expended on the ascent - the footsteps in the mud, the climbing in the rain, the trudging on when you are on fumes, the blisters, the sunburn, the dry skin every move at a cost to oneself, whether it be time, emotion, future, value, pride, or some other currency, for when it is time to come back down.
The price paid accumulates and congeals into a mass, like a black hole, siphoning energy and emotion at every moment, percolating towards the ultimate moment. This mass fate and purpose has not been determined yet. Who are you? What are you? What is your worth? What do you deserve?
As you progress through the playoffs, a doomsday clock ticks. Ticks, ticks, ticks away, always. Do you have more time? Is this it? Will this energy mass propel me to the ultimate heights, or throw me into a lightless, silent abyss? What could you have done differently?
And like the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs and reshaped the Earth as it was known then, random chaos can always be counted on. The only sure thing about almost impossible occurrences is that they do happen, at some point in time. If the time doesnt run out on you, maybe the clock will break.
Theres no easy way to repay the cost. Its a zero-sum game, the pursuit of a championship. The pain of one team is the elation of another.
All you can do is hope you can reach that first ledge, and take that first step, again.
Because there's only one way to be that 'one' - getting started.
