Murray traded for Anderson, picks

In the late hours of the evening of August 14, 2024, the Portland Trailblazers and the Sacramento Kings agreed upon a deal to send fourth-year forward Keegan Murray to the Kings in exhange for Kyle Anderson, a first round pick and a second round pick (cash considerations also headed to Sacramento along with Murray).

A difficult decision by all accounts according to sources in touch with the Portland Front Office, Murray represented one of their prized young players and assets that signified and symbolised the start of a brand new era of Portland basketball.

Murray, a 24 year old, has solidified his reputation as a stout defender, a good three-point shooter and someone with good size and athleticism at the position. His potential to be more of a three-level and consistent scorer remains, and he still has a legitimate chance to find his ceiling. Unfortunately, it was becoming more and more obvious that wouldn't be with Portland.

Murray ended up becoming a victim of circumstance, with Flagg being drafted and Brandon Ingram and Brandon Miller being brought in via trade. With a four good wings all needing starters minutes, something had to give. The glut at the 3/4 position was eased with Murray moving on. Making this trade was an evaluation of pragmatism for Portland, over potential and personal worth of Murray to the Front Office, his teammates and fans.

Heading to Portland is savvy veteran Kyle Anderson, who is still more than capable of playing a 20 minute role on a good team. Anderson, standing 6'9 and with a 7'3 wingspan, presents a defensive and playmaking headache for most players. Making $9M this season, and a NG deal for 26-27, Anderson represents value in terms of his output and flexibility in terms of future roster moves.

The future draft capital heading to Portland isn't all that glorious on its own, but it represents another investment from the Front Office into the current regime of building slowly and valuing rookies.
