Portland Survives FA, Intact
Portland Sticks Together We just have to last the night, mumbled GM jmac, or more accurately, trying to wish it into existence. Lebron James, Jakob Poeltl, Josh Richardson, Cam Reddish, Caris Levert and Tristan Thompson are all locked into, or vying for, starting spots in Portlands Week One team, highlighting just how critical the retaining of these players was, and the impact that each of them can have on a game of basketball.
Another frenzied Free Agency-fest is now behind us, and it feels like there were plenty of winners across the NSL landscape.
Portland had a lot to do on that fateful Sunday night, and needed a few things to go right to take care of their business. Thankfully, they did what they had to do - nothing more, nothing less - and maybe that was perhaps more than enough.
There were just a handful of guaranteed contracts on the roster, with many integral Blazers players fates undecided. Lebron James, Jakob Poeltl, Caris Levert, Cam Reddish, Josh Richardson, Tristan Thompson (and Ty Jerome, Orlando Robinson) all sat in the Green Room, awaiting their fates.
As much as they ever have, the Blazers Front Office had a fondness for the players that played in last seasons highly successful campaign. Instead of looking around, they focused inward.
After those tense and torrid hours of Free Agency, the Blazers Front Office rejoiced, as they were able to secure the services of every player of theirs without a contract. Talk about continuity!
Critically, most of these players will be playing right away for Portland, when the season commences in a weeks time. In what promises to be a very interesting season for the new-look Portland (over half the roster was turned over, their best player was traded), the team still figures to need some time to figure out what the team does best, and which players fit into what roles and responsibilities.
Trailblazers Basketball is back!
While the scars remain from a tortuous and vile end to the 2023 Western Conference Finals, there is renewed vigour in Oregon:
Find the fun, again, play together, play the right way barks Lebron, as the team huddles together following practice.
