Welcome Aboard (Soon)

Busy behind the scenes is an understatement for the knicks front office. Since acquiring the number 2 overall selection in the 2025 NSL draft, it was only days later that looking around the league to move it began. Eight days later, it was gone!
Moving the number 2 pick in this year’s draft was always going to be a difficult decision, but in the end, it opened the door for the Knicks franchise to fast track their build in what could be the key to become a playoff contender once again.
So, what did the Knicks pass on Dylan Harper for? Elite scoring ability, Versatile offense, clutch performer, length and agility and a veteran presence. Not only that, providing mentorship to the young core. Welcome to the Big Apple, Kevin Durant.
Moving off a prospect like Dylan Harper was always going to be tough, questions will be raised around if the team was a Kevin Durant move away from competing. The Knicks front office is always thinking ahead though, as well as gaining Durant, the team were able to only move down three spots in the draft to the number 5 overall pick. It is right here that the Knicks knew it was the right move.
With the fifth overall pick in the 2025 NSL draft, the New York Knicks select Tre Johnson, out of Texas. The team found themselves in a sweet spot this year, with no thinking to be done at all. It was always going to be between VJ Edgecombe, Ace Bailey and Tre Johnson.
Elite scoring ability and shooting efficiency, size and length and has immense confidence and clutch factor about him. Tre will become a key part of this franchise moving forward and fans should be excited about the 19-year-old prospect.
Gaining the scoring ability of Durant and Tre Johnson is a match made in heaven with the already key defensive pieces in Jaden McDaniels, and Jarrett Allen.
That is not all the Knicks have been up to though, just prior to the draft an agreement was made for another piece that will help kick start this team’s ascension up the standings.
Elite pick and role finisher and rim protection, efficient scoring, attack on the offensive glass. Daniel Gafford will put pressure on for the starting role, will create healthy competition between all big men vying for a role and help with team chemistry on and off the court.
Of course, with strength come weaknesses. The Knicks coaching staff prefer to concentrate on the positives, to have everyone play their role based on their strength while others cover for their weaknesses. Team basketball is what it is all about, and the Knicks feel they are building something that can eventually compete with the best in the league.
As the team will officially welcome their new teammates, they will also say goodbye to a few. RJ Barrett, Tidjane Salaun, and Simone Fontecchio. Thank you for your time in New York, we hope your careers continue to build and flourish as you move forward with your new teams.
