For a brief moment last week, the
NSL LA Clippers looked like a team that had finally solved the puzzle. After a
gritty mid-season push, the roster clawed its way back to a .500 record,
silencing critics who questioned their depth.
But in the NSL, momentum is a fragile currency.
The Clippers (19-21) come into Monday morning reeling from a
thus far winless week, having dropped three straight contests to hit a
late-winter wall. The slide has seen them tumble from the thick of the playoff
race back into the precarious play-in bubble, proving that in this league, the
climb to .500 is often easier than staying there.
The Big Return: Hartenstein Is Back
There is a silver lining for a frontline that has looked
fatigued during the skid. Big man Isaiah Hartenstein is
officially back in the fold this week and will slot straight back into the
centre position.
Hartenstein's absence was felt most on the glass. For a
Clippers team that struggled to find consistent rim protection during the
season, Hartenstein's 2 blocks per game (season average) will be a welcome
sight for the coaching staff.
The Gut Punch: Keyonte George Sidelined
However, the "Injury Gods" continue to demand a
tax from the Clippers' backcourt. Just as one door opens, another slams shut.
Breakout point guard Keyonte George, who has
been a shining light of the Clippers' offense this season, is back on the shelf.
It is a devastating blow for a player who was in the midst of a career-best
campaign and providing the shot-creation the team desperately needs while Jalen
Williams is sidelined.
With George out, the pressure shifts heavily to Cason
Wallace to lead the troops regain his All-Star form and for Trey
Murphy to continue his breakout season to fill the scoring void on the
wing.
The Road Ahead
The Clippers now face a defining stretch of their season.
The return of Hartenstein fixes the defence, but the loss of George creates a
vacuum of shots per game that must be accounted for.
If Los Angeles wants to avoid a total freefall, they must
find a way to integrate Hartenstein's playmaking immediately to compensate for
the lost guard play. The climb back to .500 starts tonight, but without George
and the continued absence of Jalen Williams, the incline just got a little
steeper.
