NSL Insider - Team by Team: San Antonio Spursby Shams, updated on Monday, October 30 2023, 12:05 am EST Team by Team Spurs Season Highlight/Lowlight The Spurs had a very crazy year, the fans did not know what was happening. Last offseason the team looked like they were heading into a rebuild and then out of nowhere they were trading for Giannis. Then go to in season when it looks like Harden was traded for Scottie Barnes and Jrue Holiday, to the trade being nullified due to Holiday not being able to return to them so quickly. The Spurs not taking the step back with that trade ultimately led to them winning the championship. The season didnt have a ton of lowlights in the full view of it, but it looked like the Spurs were going rebuild a few times, and always kept us guessing. Even though I know tough things happen it is hard to put out a specific lowlight when you win a championship. Best Trade: The LA Clippers send Giannis Antetokounmpo to the San Antonio Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs send Kelly Oubre, Daniel Theis, Duncan Robinson, PJ Washington, Paolo Banchero, Bennedict Mathurin a 1st-Rounder (Phi), 1st-Rounder (SA) and 1st-Rounder (SA) to the LA Clippers. When you get the best player in the NSL it automatically is a good trade, it overall worked out pretty well for the both of them. I would have to go out on a limb that without Giannis they would not have won the championship. Worst Trade: The Minnesota Timberwolves send Otto Porter and Romeo Langford to the San Antonio Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs send Malik Beasley to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Otto didnt do anything due to injury and Langford I dont believe is in the league anymore, Beasley couldve added some value to the team, but maybe it was just a long term play by Nels. Its not a big enough trade to say it was bad, one trade just had to be the worst. Other Notable Trades: The Detroit Pistons send Kyrie Irving to the Golden State Warriors. The Detroit Pistons send Dillon Brooks to the San Antonio Spurs. The Golden State Warriors send Derrick Rose and Deandre Ayton to the Detroit Pistons. The Golden State Warriors send Marvin Bagley III to the San Antonio Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs send Jerami Grant to the Golden State Warriors. The Detroit Pistons send a 1st-Rounder (Det) to the Golden State Warriors. The Detroit Pistons send a 1st-Rounder (Det) to the San Antonio Spurs. The Golden State Warriors send a 1st-Rounder (GS) to the San Antonio Spurs. This trade was really good by Nels, he turned Grant into multiple 1sts while getting a young 2k guy with Bagley and a defender who played a key part in the championship run. The value was amazing so it makes sense to why they did this trade. Spurs trade Lebron James, Terrence Ross, Justice Winslow, Marvin Bagley, Jordan Hall, 2nd rounder and 1st rounder for Mike Conley, James Harden, Christian Wood, Malachi Flynn and Facundo Campazzo. The Harden for James trade I believe was an already agreed upon trade, Mike Conley and Wood were later traded so it wasnt really a bad trade since Woods poor production didnt fall onto the Spurs. The Charlotte Hornets send Buddy Hield to the San Antonio Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs send Mike Conley to the Charlotte Hornets. More of a fit trade, but Hield also helped to bring in Vucevic which was a key piece last year, it goes to show the trades all had some sort of reason for Nels. The Charlotte Hornets send Nikola Vucevic to the San Antonio Spurs. The Miami Heat send Malcolm Brogdon to the Charlotte Hornets. The San Antonio Spurs send Buddy Hield to the Miami Heat. The Charlotte Hornets send a 1st-Rounder (Cha) to the San Antonio Spurs. The Miami Heat send a 2nd-Rounder (NY) and 2nd-Rounder (Cha) to the San Antonio Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs send a 1st-Rounder (SA) to the Charlotte Hornets. The San Antonio Spurs send a 1st-Rounder (GS) to the Miami Heat. This is the Vucevic trade which ended up pretty good even though they had to trade a 1st to get him, it isnt too big of a deal since the Spurs own the Hornets 1st this year while they have not many guys rostered and tons of FAs so it could end up being a good pick if FA doesnt go well. Free Agency: This will be a big FA for the Spurs as it always seems to be, they gotta fill holes on the roster while also retaining. Dillon Brooks is rumored to be a sign and trade, Spurs are supposedly all in on bringing Javale McGee back. We are assuming Reggie Jackson is on the target list on the Spurs list since the Spurs have held onto the cap hold he has. The Spurs are looking to sell 2nds so we will see how many GMs they actually spend. Star: Who other than the MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, he did it all out there winning DPOTY as well, nobody doubts the impact he has and if he doesnt have good night then he mustve been injured. This past 2k he was unreal, not sure how from each game to the next he changes, but hell be in the MVP conversation year in and year out. Flop: Mike Conley in the very few games he played did not play well averaging under 6 points and shooting 21% from the field, must have been the reason why Nels traded him so quickly. He didnt keep him around long enough to see if he could get even worse, so its a pretty minor flop in the grand scheme of it all. Draft Grades: I dont think he drafts too often and this year is the same. The Future: The team isn't loaded with depth or young guys, but they have amazing 2k guys and are going to be a great team for a long time especially after bringing back Giannis on an extension. The next chapter will be what happens with Harden due to all his off the court issues but if hes at least playing the Spurs should have no problem. |
