Draft Prospects - #4 Pick

The Indiana Pacers have two draft picks in this draft, but all anyone can talk about is what is going to happen at the top of the draft.  The Pacers have had numerous calls about the 4th pick, moving up, moving down, players, more picks, GM points, 2nd round picks, you name it, the conversation has been had.  So far, no agreement has been reached, but the Pacers are moving forward assuming we have the 4th pick and the 18th pick as of right now.  The following is the Pacers big board for the top pick:

Chet Holmgren, Center, Gonzaga

I dont think I need to do a lot of conversation here, he is at the top of my board and many peoples boards.  I dont see a situation where Chet falls to the Pacers at 4 unless something crazy happens.  Chets recent Summer League game has shown that he can play in this league, and the slight body doesnt look like it will be a problem.  His defensive abilities are what set him apart from the others at the top of the draft.  I love that he is a shot creator, shot maker, and he seems to be everywhere on the floor defensively.  I like to apply the Would this guy play in the Finals approach to looking at young players.  Sometimes many guys just wont be able to stay in a lineup due to defense, this will never be the case for Chet.  Chet would have started for both the Warriors and the Celtics in the last finals, and I can see him contributing to a winning team, even if he doesnt end up being a 30ppg scorer, he impacts winning.

Jaden Ivey, Guard, Purdue

This may be controversial, but I can see Jaden being the best player in this draft.  His explosiveness is what leaps off the screen at you when you watch him.  His decision making can be questionable at times, but his shot is good enough that he can turn into a good shooter in the NBA, and he has the athleticism to be an above average defender.  I know a lot of teams are thinking he should go high, and I was surprised that Keegan Murray went above him in the NBA draft.  My bet is that the Kings just didnt want to draft another point guard, but that mistake will not be made by the NSL Pacers.  While we already have Ball and Poole, this team is not one piece away from a championship, but many pieces, so taking the best chance at a superstar is where we will go.

Paulo Banchero, Forward, Duke

Paulo has moved up my board after the NBA Magic, and his stellar summer league performance, but there are still some doubts as to his fit on a high-level NBA team.  We havent seen a lot of big men power forwards dominating playoffs in recent years unless you count Giannis, who I think is just a freak and we cant compare people to.  Paulo has been compared to Julius Randle, and while Randle has been a nice story until this last season, that is not someone I want as my #1 player.  He is a great #3, but I just dont see Paulo being the lead dude on a team.  Does that mean he isnt gonna be a good player, no, but it does make me hesitant to take him as a franchise-savior.

Jabari Smith Jr, Forward, Auburn

Jabari I was really high on for a while, and I am still fairly high on, his comps are a better Rashard Lewis, which leads me straight into the same comparison with Paulo.  Lewis was on a good Magic team with Dwight back in the day that went to the finals, however, he was maybe the third option on that team.  I see Jabari being a high-level contributor, but I dont see him as the alpha dog on a team.  Just look at his Auburn year.  He had terrible guards the entire year, and they didnt pass to him a lot.  This contributed to their inability to advance in the tournament.  Could this happen in the NBA?  Well as a non-shot creator, he will be highly dependent on whoever he is playing with, so he really will need all-star level teammates to make an impact.  I like Jabari, but not as much as the others.

So where do we go from here, well this is the top 4 in my book, and knowing we have the 4th pick, we dont need to look much further down.  Murray was in consideration, as was Sharpe and Mathurin at different points in my analysis, but ultimately, I see these four as the guys that will be my target.  Murray will be a solid player, I dont see him not being good in the NBA, but will he be great?  As a Pacers fan, I want Mathurin to be amazing, do I think he will be, potentially, would I rather have Chet, hell yeah.  Sharpe is no longer even in my rearview mirror after his summer league performance and all the rumblings about his bad interviews with the NBA teams.
