The Wise Man
James Wiseman, who was taken second overall back in 2020 has had far from a smooth transition to the NBA. There have been some substantial injuries and a lack of playing time hasnt helped him.
I am not sure why there is some hostility towards the young 22 year old, but his recent success and improvement has been a welcomed sight and a great sign for the young big man. Those who arent supportive of him can just keep sipping their Hatorade.
Generally speaking, big men tend to take some more time to grow into themselves and develop in productive players. If you look at the numbers Wiseman has barely played during his college tenure and his first two NBA seasons.
He was suspended during his lone college season due to off court reasons and opted to remain out after only playing two or three games.
Then he gets drafted second to a contending team, who will not allow him to play through his mistakes. That combined with injuries meant he barely played in his first two seasons in the league.
So as you can see, three years of no consistency and no real opportunities is never going to help development.
Wiseman is now getting the opportunities to do all those things. Especially play through his mistakes. Which of course there is many. However it is obvious that the size and athleticism, combined with his raw talent is definitely something to be excited about.
He has shown that he has really soft touch around the rim, and the jump shot from the mid range looks to be fairly fluid. His defence is still a work in progress as someone of his size should really be able to dominate and control the paint. Which hopefully will be something to come in the future.
Boston General Manager, Toby, has never been anything but optimistic about Wiseman, and we all know he has the patience to let him develop. His patience may be coming to fruition as Wiseman has started and played in 66 games for Boston this season.
He is putting up averages of over 10 points, 13 rebounds and over a block. He is currently 14th in the league in field goal percentage. He has put up double doubles in his last six games and all but one were victories.
It is great to see any young player develop, especially when they have overcome adversity. But what makes it even sweeter is when that young player plays at Boston.
