Philly Draft: The 16th Pick is...

Philly Frills: 10/07/2024

The NSL draft is done for another year and this year the Philadelphia 76ers were lucky enough to be drafting in the 1st round instead of just the 2nd. They had Pick 24, and acquired Pick 23 also, and were hoping that this might mean they could draft Ryan Dunn and Yves Missi. This plan was quickly falling by the wayside as the draft stock of both players was rising, and they opted shortly after being knocked out of the NSL Playoffs to instead focus their attention on just the one man, Ryan Dunn. They pursued trades into the mid-late teens to guarantee their guy, and when they acquired pick 16 from the New York Knicks, it was done.

With the 16th pick in the NSL draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select Ryan Dunn out of Virginia.

Age: 21
Position: SF
Height: 6’6
Weight: 214lbs

Dunn was touted in the NBA 2nd round for much of the process as one of, if not the best, perimeter defender in the draft, but with a lot of room to grow on the offensive end. He was mocked as high as pick 22 by the end of it, to Phoenix, but a draft day trade meant he was instead selected to Phoenix at pick 28, but the precedent was there. Phoenix in many ways might be the perfect landing spot for a defensive difference maker like Dunn, as he won’t be asked to do much more than run the floor and cover all manners of opposition offensive players, and these things he can do. His shooting is supposedly ahead of where it looked for Virgina and their slow paced, methodical offence, and if he can even prove to be mediocre out there, he’ll have a long career as a stopper ahead.

For the 76ers, Dunn is the perfect prototype for their team make up and style. They love defensive players and he can fit right in with Steven Adams, Marcus Smart, Gary Payton II and the bunch of hopeful developmental 2way wings they already have.

Welcome to Philadelphia, Ryan Dunn!
