76ers Hectic Draft Day!
Philly Frills – 22/07/2025
The 76ers have
completed yet another draft day in which they featured heavily! This year, they
actually had their own 1st round pick to their name, which was pick
21, and the bevvy of 2nd round picks that they usually have in the
loot bag. On top of that, they made a pre-draft trade where they agreed to send
Jalen Green out with 2x future 2nds, for Devin Vassell, Pick 18 and Pick 19,
paving the way for more draft action and further moves.
In the end,
after a few more pre-draft trades of shuffling 2nd round picks, and
sending out a package coupled with Paal George to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the
final pick order of the 76ers was:
Picks 18,
21, 37, 40, 43, 48, 52 and 58.
They had a
plan. They were locked in on two guys in the 1st round giving them
draft promises and they held true to their word, despite the unexpected
availability of NBA pick 7, Jeremiah Fears, and went with their gut.
Pick 18 – Uber
athletic defensive specialist wing, Drake Powell.
Pick 21 –
Euro athletic energy guy and menace on defence, Hugo Gonzalez.
The 2nd
round was always going to be a crap shoot. The team is full up on contracted
guys, so the top 11 NBA selected guys were probably not the way to go without further
trades, but also being pick 37, the better ones were likely to already be gone.
The plan was to be fluid and draft with a plan if offers of trades didn’t come
to fruition. Pick 37 had a promise of 3x future 2nd round picks if
Noah Penda was on the board, but he was gone, and so the 76ers selected. Pick
40 and 43 was just a raffle of “Which of my 2 guys do I take at which spot to
get them both?”. Both guys were grabbed. Pick 48 was where the ”Eh, I’m good
either way” feelings came in, so when an offer of 2x 2nds if Mohamed Diawara
was on the board was put on the table, and he was there, the deal was accepted.
52 was a toss up between taking a budding euro stash, a back up 2way PG option,
or trading for a single 2nd round pick. The PG selection was chosen.
And finally, pick 58, was again offered a future 2nd for, but was
decided to simply take the draft stash previously mentioned. And the draft was
done.
Pick 37 – Giant
19 year old Aussie on a 2way deal, 7’4, Rocco Zikarsky.
Pick 40 – High
IQ multifaceted floor general on a 2way (for now), Ryan Nembhard.
Pick 43 – High
IQ, jumbo sized euro wing, and hopeful draft stash, Bogoljub Markovic.
Pick 48 – Mohamed
Diawara, traded to the Chicago Bulls for two future 1nd round picks.
Pick 52 –
Athletic 2way play making PG on a 2way deal, as a fail safe for Nembhard, Javon
Small.
Pick 58 –
Athletic and young late blooming 2way wing, stashing in Europe, Saliou Niang.
Player
breakdowns will occur over the next months leading into the season, but the
76ers are ecstatic with their draft haul and very happy to see the roster
rounded out.
