Shelter in Place
So what’s going on right now in GM Spudspace’s life? Let’s get a quick interview to see how he is holding up:
Q: Spudspace, what’s your state doing about the COVID-19 outbreak right now?
A: Well, Indiana instituted a shelter-in-place this last week, and it goes on until April 6th for now, but we don’t know how long it will last.
Q: What are you able to do related to basketball right now?
A: I do a lot of scouting to be honest. A lot of people think that since March Madness got cancelled, it’s going to be harder to evaluate college players, but that’s not how my front office does it. A lot of people put a ton of value on March performance, players like Donte DiVincenzo, Shapazz Napier, and Mateen Cleaves all boosted their values highly in the tournament but didn’t turn out to be that great of NBA players. I don’t think Donte is a bust at all, but he might not have been drafted without that championship game.
Q: So you’re saying that you don’t think the tournament is a good indicator of NBA success?
A: I just don’t think having a good month of basketball changes who you are as a basketball player. If you are a good front office, guys should be on your radar before March, and the tourney should just be confirmation. If you are in the front office and you consider a guy for the draft that you wouldn’t have before the tourney, I don’t think you are doing your job right.
Q: Wow, that sounds like a real indictment of the league!
A: Listen, I can see owners being influenced, it’s not their job to watch year-round, so I can see pressure from ownership to take a player, but me, I watch a lot of the Euro players, I usually try to watch a few games of each big name college player every year to figure out my feelings on them before we start doing real prep-work.
Q: So moving on, I take it you are just watching video of a ton of prospects right now?
A: Well, I do that a lot, but being at home a lot, I’ve been spending time with the wife and dog, working out a lot. We recently restarted the Harry Potter series, my wife had never seen them! Can you believe that!
Well it sounds like Spudspace is keeping busy at home, hopefully he can do some good draft scouting, and keep from going insane cooped up in his house! Stay safe everyone!
