Playoff Seeding
The Pacers were without their MVP candidate last week and this caused some issues in the standings. The team went 1-3 last week with their only win coming against the lowly Bucks. The team is looking to get back on track this week, with everyone healthy on the team except TJ Warren, who is expected back next season. This week will be crucial, as the team is in 5thplace in the East, but is only a single game ahead of 6th place Chicago. Luckily, the matchup this week isn’t nearly as difficult as it has been. We have first place Detroit, which will pose a large challenge, but then both the Bucks and Cleveland should be winnable games, and the Grizzlies will follow it up which could be a challenge.
The Bulls are going to be playing Miami, Toronto, Atlanta, and the Clippers. Atlanta is really the only pushover game, the other 3 could be a challenge. The Pacers really need Chicago to lose 2 or 3 of these games to hold onto the 5th seed in the East and feel good about their chances in the playoffs.
What does the 5th seed get us? A visit with the Wizards, whereas the 6th seed would get the Knicks. Both of these teams are really good, so there isn’t any gamesmanship here as we try to make the playoff seeding work. The Pacers are trying for the best seed they can, and will take any opponent on before them.
This will be an interesting week, as the team is fully healthy, and getting to play the top seeded Pistons will be a good yardstick for where the Pacers actually are. Embiid has a final chance to prove he is an MVP candidate, and if he sweeps this week, will show that he has that resume.
