Back in 2011, then NLL Bulls GM Daz had just selected Kemba Walker at pick six in the 2011 draft.
With the point guard spot now locked down, Kemba needed a backcourt running mate, and it was hoped Klay Thompson, a young shooter just drafted by the NBA Warriors, Daz's favourite team, would still be available at the teams next pick, 12.
Unfortunately for Daz, Klay would be taken one spot before at pick 11, leaving Daz to go with his backup option, a young man out of Colorado, by the name of Alec Burks.
Burks was athletic, could handle the ball and had a good nose for defence. Unfortunately hindsight now tells us, losing out on Klay was a huge deal, but lets leave the past in the past now.
Fast forward almost 11 years later, Daz is in a new league, with a new team, but an old favourite Alec Burks is now back with the GM with whom he started his pro career.
When Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the teams point guard and leading scorer went down with the ankle injury in week 12, Daz knew they were in trouble.
With Hamidou Diallo already playing backup pg, and Killian Hayes the only other point guard on the roster. Daz knew if he put either of those guys at starting pg, that the misses and losses would mount.
Then the GM heard that Alec Burks was available, and he couldn't resist seeing if a reunion with an old friend might help keep the Bucks afloat, while awaiting Shai's return.
In a single test game with Burks at the helm, he scored 28 points on 49% shooting, leading the Bucks to a big win over rival Cleveland. That was enough to convince Daz to part with Torrey Craig and 3 second rounds picks to get the deal done.
Now after 2 weeks at starting point guard, hindsight again shows us that he hasn't quite averaged the 28 and 49%. Rather 14 and 31%, but the losses haven't mounted. The Bucks have won 6 from 8 and now sit 4th in the East, there highest standing all season.
Now with Shai set to return for a huge week 15, with games against Eastern playoff contenders Charlotte, Toronto, Philadelphia and New York, the Bucks are well placed heading into the remainder of the season, especially with Alec now able to run the second unit!
Let's go Bucks!
