Clippers News

State of a franchise

Here we are the middle of week 13 and the Clippers in a literal free fall at time of writing on a 6 game skid, whilst still currently reasonably and comfortably in a western conference play in spot. And atop the Pacific the Phoenix suns and Sacramento Kings are on a mission and catching up rapidly.

With 29 games left in the 2022/23 season the schedule does get a little easier going from opponents played .503% to .471%

The problem here is the Suns only a handful of games behind have an even easier run home @.455% and the Kings just behind with a schedule strength of .461%

Its going to be tough to hang on, that said the Clippers remain quietly confident in achieving the goal they placed on them selves to start the season of Play-ins and Division champions.

What we wont do to achieve our future goals is make rash moves that are to the detriment of future success. What we value right now is cap flexibility heading into the 2023/24 draft.

The Core of the team is taking shape with 5 future picks in the war chest too add to the foundation of the team.

There were talks of trades recently, but they have cooled off and moved to the back burner with any franchise defining decisions to be completed most likely in the post season.

THE CORE

 Centre

N/A

Dwight Powell sits on the roster as the only genuine center, which isnt really an issue specifically due to the fact he is an expiring contract and not likely to feature in the 2023/24 version of the Los Angeles Clippers. With the Centre position fairly easily replaceable by the next 7 free agent / draft pick

Power Forward

Paolo Banchero $11,055,020 (Rookie Scale)

Tari Eason $3,359,180 (Rookie Scale)

The Power forward position looks like it is well taken care of for several years with both Paolo and Tari the shiny new additions from the past draft a little more contentious however is the future of PJ Washington on the Clippers roster.

Small Forward

Trey Murphy $3,206,640 (Rookie Scale)

Jalen Williams $4,341,480 (Rookie Scale)

Trey and Jalen Williams are without a doubt the future of the Clippers wing position both extremely versatile offering slightly different skill sets that compliment each other nicely.

Corey Kispert while considered a valuable piece and a previous season lottery pick looks as though could be the odd man out moving forward. And has recently been a topic of discussion on the trade front.

Duncan Robinson is clearly a bad contract, and one the Clipper will have to sit on for a while, there is hope he could return to form after injury set backs

Shooting Guard

Bennedict Mathurin $6,586,800 (Rookie Scale)

RJ Barrett $10,900,000 (4yr ext.)

Bennedict and RJ isnt a terrible Shooting guard 1, 2 punch to have on the roster, and hopes are high that Bennedict can keep taking strides toward stardom in the coming years. RJ the more senior of the two is viewed as a definite starter though more likely at the lead guard or small forward spot.

Recent trade requests have been made for the young star however nothing that will see him move any time soon.

Point Guards

Ayo Donsunmu $1,563,512 (RFA)

Pretty sad situation for LA at the point guard spot, Ayo the only recognized point guard and still not good enough to earn starter minutes ahead of the part time PG RJ Barrett.

That said Ayo is still part of the current core until a suitable replacement becomes available whether that be through Draft, Trade or free agency is yet to be seen.

Cap situation

Cap flexibility is the goal moving forward and heading into next season free agency / draft period, I am well aware as of right now the Clippers are simply making up the numbers. While a play in spot would be a huge win. Like previous seasons its also met with 1st round exit expectations.

With 54 million in expiring contracts and 5 1st round draft picks I feel like the Clippers will be an ideal landing spot for a top tier player. Whether that is from trade or FA who knows

Trade Blocked

PJ Washington

Corey Kispert

Pat Connaughton

Evan Fournier

Kelly Oubre

Duncan Robinson
