Overachieving
Just 12 months ago this clippers team featuring Giannis,
Sabonis, Sexton and RJ Barrett leading the charge stumbled into the 2022 NSL playoffs
and an eventual 6th seed while the overall record was quite a bit
better finishing on 53 wins the former team was also better than this current
clipper team and by quite a significant margin. If we can get to 40 wins and a
-13 on the previous season it will be a massive achievement
the fact we have now locked in the pre-season goal of a Play-in
tournament appearance is simply amazing and a sign that rebuilding a team doesnt
always require tanking your way to high lottery picks.
What we have now in LA is essentially a blank slate to work
with (sort of)
Cashed Up
With the season winding down and one eye firmly on a play in
matchup the other eye is firmly on the upcoming off season and the next chapter
in the Clippers era
First cab off the rank will be the NBA (NSL Draft) where the
Clippers will have 6 x 1st round picks 2 x 2nd round
picks while its unrealistic to go into the 2023/24 season with 8 new rookies it
does highlight the fact LAC will be active on the trade front trying to
consolidate assets into player needs.
In combination with the draft assets the Clippers will also
have the luxury of a whopping 8 expiring contracts with a total value of approx.
$75,000,000 one of those expiring deals includes Jerami Grant who will be
retained (or will attempted to be retained) which should put the franchise in a
position where we are able to add a max level FA
All in all, we couldnt be happier to be in our current
position to go from the projected worst team in the league to a play in spot,
leading the pacific division title race all whilst rebuilding the team for (hopefully)
years to come is a blessing.
Needs.
The one true need for the LA franchise heading into
off-season activities will without a doubt be too sure up the Centre position.
Dwight Powell wont be retained, and Paolo is without question a 4. [brain
starts repeating coulda tanked for Wemby, coulda tanked for Wemby...]
In addition to the centre position LAC could also use a
starting level Point guard with RJ Barrett viewed more as a SG and could very
well see himself linked again in trade talks to facilitate bring in a high
level lead guard.
Future
Its always fun to imagine what you can build on when looking
ahead to the next season and the areas that need improvement.
