Toronto hits youth movement
In the wake of a disappointing season by our GMs standards (mainly due to Zion's inability to remain healthy) Toronto has shipped out all core players from our 2nd round playoff run. Our big 3 Deandre Ayton, Dejounte Murray and Zion Williamson have all found new homes. As well as some role players in Delon Wright, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Dorian Finney-Smith and young prospect who we wish we would have been able to keep Josh Green. Replacing them is a young core 4 deep of players under 22 years old bringing in last year's #1 overall pick Chet Holmgren, last year's #5 overall pick Keegan Murray, drafting at #3 in this season's rookie draft Amen Thompson and through the Deandre Ayton deal adding Devin Vassell who should be set for a big year 4.
The new young core is set to be a re-tool more than a rebuild, due to the Raptors having none of their 1st round picks, all of which were dealt away in deals by the prior GM hitting a hard reset was next to impossible. Coming in later deals young big man out of the Phoenix Suns in Nick Richards will be brought in for Isaac Okoro who no longer had a place in our rotation. One more deal on the horizon is Spencer Dinwiddie who was also brought in on the Chet Holmgren deal will be dealt in free agency in a sign and trade deal for All Defensive guard Dillon Brooks. Dillon Brooks although overpaid was seen as a luxury due to having so many rookies on the roster like the NBA Rockets adding him to our list does not impact our ability to pay our rookies as all will receive extensions as Brooks expires. Brooks also brings championship experience after a season on the NSL Spurs and like Tobias Harris is a quality veteran who will bring vital leadership to the young core. While the inexperience of the roster might prove somewhat of a challenge, we do expect our size and defensive prowess to overwhelm a lot of teams. With 2 6'7 guards who excel at POA defense as well as 2 7-foot rim protectors at PF and C we will look to overwhelm teams with length and defensive ability.
Going into the 23/24 NSL season we have a depth chart is as follows (pending any moves with Tobias Harris or Dillon Brooks):
Amen Thompson/TyTy Washington
Dillon Brooks/Devin Vassell
Tobias Harris/Keegan Murray
Chet Holmgren/Jalen Smith/Moussa Diabate
Nick Richards/Jay Huff
Welcome to the new era Raptors fans, hope you're as excited as we are to see them develop and win games.
