Evan Mobley
As GM Daz prepares for his third season in the NSL, reflecting
on a successful yet prematurely ending second season, it is Evan Mobley that is
front of mind.
While winning the GM of the year award was incredibly
humbling and a nice reward for a lot of hard work, losing in the Conference
finals for a second consecutive time really stung.
The Bucks have improved, there is no doubt. They found an
identity as a defensive powerhouse and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made another
step towards stardom, culminating in a maiden all-star appearance and being
named to all NSL third team. But they still couldnt get over the conference
finals hump.
Upon joining the league, there was always a 3-year plan in place,
to really contend for the Championship, well here we are, and it is Evan Mobley
who is probably the key to that plan becoming a reality.
While it may be unfair to lump so much pressure on to the 22-year
olds shoulders, Evan joined the Bucks around the same time as Daz, so the GM
feels a special connection to the 3rd pick of the 2021 draft.
It quickly became clear that Evan was something special,
with a rare combination of size, skill, and a defensive understanding of
someone so young.
In year one, he almost averaged a double - double as the starting
power forward, anchoring the Bucks defence. In year two, the defence was still there,
and he improved a little on the boards, but the offensive output remained
pretty much the same.
It is that offensive output that is the key which needs to
be unlocked, in this GMs opinion, for the Bucks to take that important next
step into the NSL Finals, and who knows what can happen from there.
But is there room for improvement? And how quickly? That is
the question that GM Daz has been pondering, and the reason Evans name has
been thrown out in discussions around such players as Anthony Davis, Giannis Antetokounmpo
and Scottie Barnes this offseason.
Ultimately Daz has decided to back his man in with the season
now only a couple of weeks away, so a keen eye will be cast over how much Evans
offensive game has evolved and how it progresses as season three gets underway.
Go well young man!
