Philly Draft: The 30th Pick is...

Philly Frills: 17/07/2024

The NSL draft is done for another year and this year the Philadelphia 76ers were lucky enough to be drafting in the 1st round instead of just the 2nd. They had Pick 24, and 23 originally, but once they’d traded up to pick 16 using Pick 24, they traded down from 23 to acquire pick 30 and some extra dart throws in the 2nd round. Pick 30 was shopped a little, but ended up being in their pocket on draft day and so they selected.

With the 30th pick in the NSL draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select Tyler Smith out of the GLeague Ignite.

Age: 19
Position: PF/SF
Height: 6’10
Weight: 224lbs

Smith was in the pipeline for a few teams at the picks around here after he went 33rd in the NBA to the Milwaukee Bucks. At 19 years old, he’s one of the younger guys in the draft so has some time to grow and realise the potential that a 6’10 fluid moving forward can have. He was a big time per minute scorer inside and out for the ignite last year, with a nice high release connecting on a lot of outside shots, which is pivotal for the modern NBA big man.

Smith probably won’t see a lot of court time as a rookie in the NBA or NSL, but will look to move forward as that floor spacing big man and develop his defensive coverage using his size on the wing.

For Philadelphia, they get themselves another high upside project player who might find a roster spot immediately on a nice cheap deal, or could wind up being the added trade chip piece to help move the roster forward toward a strong playoff showing for the 2024/25 season.

For now, Tyler Smith, welcome to the Philadelphia 76ers!
