Play-ins
Wow.... How did we get here? My team was 2nd in the Western Conference. Then in a series of 5 weeks, we dropped 6 slots down to the 8th slot and now fighting for a spot in play-in contention. Only for a chance to face the #1 or #2 seed in the West. Combined, we have only gone 1-7 against these teams: 1-2 against the Jazz and 0-4 against the Thunder.
Could things have gone any differently for the Rockets?
- If the NBA 76ers didn’t have a top 6 pick protection on their 2025 1st round and intentionally held out Tyrese Maxey to tank their record, YES.
- If Brandon Boston hadn’t gotten injured and missed the rest of the season, YES.
- If Nelso didn’t cancel our deal for Taurean Prince because he found a better deal two days before the megatrade week, YES.
- If I had just waited for Taurean Prince to go back on sale instead of spending our spare 2 2nds on Jake Laravia, YES.
- But MOST IMPORTANTLY, if I was willing to go over the luxury tax, I could of gotten PJ Washington at the beginning of the season.
But as a result, we struggled in the last quarter of the season because Maxey was out and we lacked a backup small forward and power forward position. I’ll also slip in that I had the chance to trade Tyrese Haliburton for a 36 year old NBA legend. But I passed. In all scenarios, I would have inevitably had to face the #1 or #2 seed and lost. Except in the scenario had I traded for a 36 year old NBA legend. I probably could have won it all.
End of Season Prediction:
My end of season prediction is that it’s going to end up exactly like every single season. Advance out of the play-ins. Then get stomped by the #1 or #2 seed. Only this time it won’t be at the hands of the San Antonio Spurs.
